What is a film classic?

For roughly thirty-five years, from the thirties to the mid-sixties, the Silver Screen was larger than life. The titles listed below unfold further depth upon repeated viewings, movies moving you beyond yourself. (Is that intense richness what makes them classics?) To enter into their worlds is to find yourself echoing Faulkner: The past is never dead. It's not even past.

Why is watching old movies important?

Not watching old movies, the sad habit of too many young people today, means suffering from acute cultural deprivation. Never having encountered the films of "Forbidden Hollywood," we think we in the twenty-first century outrank the censor. But with an equally true take on the past, L.P. Hartley reminds us: The past is a different country. They do things differently there. To put it more positively, "taking in" a movie classic is a magical voyaging. The joy of sitting in the dark about what to expect, watching subtly expressive, spellbindingly beautiful faces lit from within, casting a sideways glance at the slight downturn in Greta Garbo's lips.... What could be greater than getting outside one's time, which with the provinciality of the present moment would leave us lacking any breathable perspective on our age while presuming its superiority to days gone by?

Back "then" actors had more mobile, unusual faces and spoke not in monotones but with an animation that shames us by comparison. Because the pace of old movies is much slower than contemporary films, more play is given to explorations of interiority, lingering sweep, character, background layers, incandescent focus, adumbration. The camera's eye seems a difference in kind compared with today's. Not to mention the glories of shaded black and white, such a relief from more current cinema's shiny surfaces. Watching movies from the golden age means being immersed in Gaston Bachelard's "intimate immensity," meeting our almost touchable ancestors in silvered flesh and blood. They are uncannily more alive than we, not any wiser or better (alas) but nevertheless larger and more real, in fact taking such an immortal delight in dwarfing us, outliving and outdying us that we're left delighted too.

366 movie classics, 1915–1969
